X - Plorer

X-plorer is a portable device that identifies and documents species in natural environments, connecting biodiversity with the user. Its development is based on the premise of recording observations of fauna and flora without creating a sensory disruption with the surroundings, through a respectful and silent use of technological resources. The device features offline artificial intelligence capable of identifying species through data captured by an interchangeable modular camera, which can also operate autonomously as a camera trap system. These observations are uploaded to the database of the Basque Country’s Nature Information System, where the platform enables verification, cross-referencing, and the detection of inconsistencies or unprecedented findings. Designed from a deep interest in the natural environment, the device is grounded in an experience centered on digital restraint, incorporating e-ink displays, physical buttons, and a non-invasive interaction language. The project is contextualized in the Basque Country, placing particular emphasis on its biodiversity, network of natural parks, institutions, and environmental resources. X-plorer stands as both a functional tool and a reflection on how technology can act as a bridge between humans and the ecosystems they inhabit, reinforcing environmental awareness and the value of active, individual observation.
